Privacy Policy
1. Your data stays on your phone
Your photos and videos never leave your phone. The AI that upscales, unblurs and restores them runs entirely on your device, even in airplane mode. We operate no servers that receive or process your pictures, and there is no account.
- Upscalio only reads the photos and videos you pick yourself in the Android system photo picker. It cannot browse your gallery and asks for no photo, video or storage permission.
- Enhanced copies are saved as new files in the Pictures/Upscalio and Movies/Upscalio folders (or a folder you choose). Your originals are never changed or deleted.
- Work in progress (preview tiles, the batch queue) is kept in the app's private storage and cleared when the job ends. A result only leaves your phone if you share it.
- To choose a processing mode, Upscalio checks your phone's hardware: chip model, memory, GPU support, video encoder, free storage, temperature and a short speed test. These readings stay on the device; only rounded, anonymous values (for example “6 GB, mid tier, GPU”) are sent with analytics so we can tune performance.
2. Permissions
- Photos and videos — no permission. You pick files in the system photo picker, one at a time or several for a batch.
- Notifications — optional: batch progress, “batch done” and occasional reminders. You can turn them off at any time in Android settings.
- Internet and network state — only for ads, analytics, crash reports, the Remove ads purchase and the consent message. Enhancing works without a connection, and your photos and videos are never sent.
- No camera, microphone, location, contacts or “all files” access.
3. Analytics and crash reports (Google Firebase)
With your consent where required, we use Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Crashlytics to understand how the app is used and to fix crashes. We log anonymous events such as “photo enhanced” (preset, scale and rounded time, never the picture) or “purchase completed”, plus device model, OS and app version, approximate region and an app-instance identifier. We never log your content; the app enforces this with an allow-list of event parameters. Crash reports contain the error type and stack trace only. Firebase Remote Config is used to tune ad frequency and the processing limits for each hardware tier.
4. Advertising (Google AdMob and Unity Ads)
Every feature of Upscalio is free and supported by ads: a slim banner on some screens, one full-screen ad after the first-run introduction, and an occasional full-screen ad after you save a result. Ads never appear while an enhancement is running, on the before/after comparison or while you trim a video. An optional one-time purchase, “Remove ads”, turns all ads off; it does not unlock any extra features.
Ads are served by Google AdMob, with Unity Ads competing through AdMob mediation and serving the banner directly. These partners may collect the advertising ID, device and usage information and approximate location derived from your IP address to serve and measure ads. See Google's and Unity's privacy policies.
5. Your choices (GDPR, UK GDPR, Swiss FADP, US state laws)
In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Upscalio asks for your consent through Google's consent message (IAB TCF) before personalised ads or analytics are used. If you decline, ads are non-personalised and analytics stays off. In US states with privacy laws (such as California, Virginia, Colorado), you can opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and targeted advertising. You can change your choice at any time in Settings → Privacy choices.
Legal bases (GDPR): consent for analytics and personalised ads; performance of a contract for the features you use and for purchases; legitimate interest for crash diagnostics where consent is not required. You may request access, deletion, correction or portability of data we control, object to processing, or lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority. California residents (CCPA/CPRA): we do not sell personal information for money; ad partners may receive identifiers as described above, which you can opt out of in Privacy choices. We do not discriminate against users who exercise their rights.
6. Purchases
Upscalio has one optional in-app purchase, a one-time “Remove ads”. There are no subscriptions. The purchase is processed by Google Play; we never receive your payment details, and Google only tells the app whether ads have been removed.
7. Retention and deletion
Enhanced photos and videos remain in your Pictures/Upscalio and Movies/Upscalio folders until you delete them; temporary files are removed when a job ends or when you uninstall the app. Analytics data is retained by Google for up to 14 months. See how to delete your data.
8. Children
Upscalio is not directed to children under 13 (under 16 in the EEA) and we do not knowingly collect their data.
9. Changes
We will update this page if our practices change and revise the date above.
